ABOUT PACKIE BONNER

Retired goalkeeper known for his prolific career with Celtic. He appeared in nearly 650 games for club and won five Scottish Leagues, three Scottish Cups, and two Super League Cups.

He played youth soccer for Keadue Rovers and spent some time with Leicester City before joining Celtic in 1978.

He became one of the Republic of Ireland's most exceptional goalkeepers, a career epitomized by saving a penalty against Romania in the 1990 World Cup, which propelled Ireland to its first quarterfinal.

He and wife Ann have a daughter named Melissa and son named Andrew. His brother Denis also played professional soccer.

When he retired from international play in 1996, he was the most-capped keeper in the country's history with 80 appearances. The record was later broken by Shay Given .
