American teacher and author of children's books. She was best known for her Polk Street School series.
She attended Marymount University for her undergraduate degree and St. John's University, where she obtained her Master's.
She won the Newbery Medal in 1998 for Lily's Crossing and again in 2003 for Pictures of Hollis Woods.
She had three children with her husband, Jim.
