Best known for songs "I Don't Want to Wait." and "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?", which was a Billboard Hot 100 1997 top-10 hit. The first of those songs has garnered more than 100 million streams on Spotify.
She studied jazz singing and improvisation at the Berklee College of Music. She was honored with a Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1998.
Her time touring with Sarah McLachlan's Lilith Fair solidified her reputation as a masterful live performer. In 2024, she released her 11th studio album, Lo.
Her mother was an elementary school art teacher and her father was a biology and ecology professor as well as a polka musician.
