ABOUT RICHARD WILBUR

Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and renowned translator of seventeenth-century French plays by Moliere, Racine, and Corneille. Wilbur's poetry collections include Anterooms, A Bestiary, and Walking to Sleep.

He attended Amherst College and Harvard University and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was awarded the 1994 National Medal of Arts by former U.S. President Bill Clinton .

With his wife, Mary Charlotte Hayes Ward, he had four children.

He wrote lyrics for several songs in composer Leonard Bernstein 's Tony Award-nominated operetta, Candide.
