ABOUT RITA MAE BROWN
An American writer and feminist, she is best known for her explicit novel, Rubyfruit Jungle, which deals with lesbian themes. Her other novels include Venus Envy, In Her Day, and Loose Lips.
She studied English at New York University. She published her debut poetry collection, The Hand that Cradles the Rock, in 1971.
She was a founding member of The Furies Collective, a lesbian feminist publication.
She is a lesbian and had relationships with tennis player Martina Navratilova and actress/writer Fannie Flagg .
She resigned from the National Organization for Women due to Betty Friedan 's anti-gay remarks.
