Former midfielder who played for over 18 years in countries such as Brazil and England. While playing with the Brazilian men's national team, he was given the opportunity to compete in two FIFA World Cups. In 1983, he was named 'South American Footballer of the Year.'

He originally began his professional club career with the Botafogo Football Club in 1973. He was just a teenager at the time.

Due to his influence off the field, he was often referred to as "Doctor Socrates." In fact, he studied medicine in college and became a licensed physician.

Although he was born in Belém, Brazil, he grew up living with his parents and his siblings in the Ribeirão Preto area of Brazil. He is survived by his six children.

He was once mentioned by Brazilian soccer legend Pelé as one of the 'Top 100' greatest soccer players ever.
