She was born Sarah Louise Richards and goes by Sarah Lou. She and long-time partner Aston Merrygold welcomed their first son, Grayson Jax on January 30, 2018, and their second son, Macaulay Shay on June 5, 2020. The two wed in October of 2022. On September 29, 2023, they announced that they were expecting their third child.

JLS, for which her husband was the lead singer, was a runner-up to Alexandra Burke in the fifth season of the X Factor.
