He played soccer and football at Seabreeze High School in Florida, reportedly kicking an 82-yard field goal in practice.

At Florida State, he was a two-time Lou Groza Award winner, an honor given to the nation's best collegiate placekicker.

He was born to Henryk and Halina Janikowski; his father was a pro soccer player.

He played for head coach Bobby Bowden at Florida State.
