He began his senior career as a defender in 1978, when he was only eighteen years old.

He was the coach of an amateur soccer squad called "My Team" that was formed for an Indonesian reality TV show that aired in 2006.

His family lived in Kluang, Johor, Malaysia at the time of his birth.

He and Shaun Maloney both represented Malaysia in international play.
