After completing her studies at the University of Wales, she trained at the famous Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and was offered roles in several Hollywood films; however, preferring to work in the theatre, she remained in England.

She was nominated for a 2013 Olivier Award for her supporting role in an English stage production of the musical Cabaret. She also performed in numerous television and radio productions, including, respectively, I, Claudius (for which she won a BAFTA Award) and The Leopard in Autumn.

After divorcing her first husband, then-University of Wales student Don Roy, she wed the legendary stage and screen actor Peter O'Toole. Twenty years and two children later, she married (and subsequently divorced) her third husband, actor Robin Sachs .

She appeared with Richard Burton in the 1964 film Becket (an adaptation of the Jean Anouilh play).
