ABOUT SIDNEY KEYES
British, World War II-era poet who became known for The Cruel Solstice and The Iron Laurel. Both works received the prestigious Hawthornden Prize.
He was a student at Queen's College, Oxford until 1942, when he joined the British Army.
He died in combat in Tunisia in 1943, just a month shy of his twenty-first birthday.
He fell in love with Milein Cosman, a German artist, but she never returned his affections.
He and author Graham Greene were both recipients of the Hawthornden Prize in the early 1940s.
