She studied at a Catholic grade school, where she first found and became disconcerted about the hateful portrayals of Jews.
When asked why she dedicated so much time and effort to her cause, she said an understanding between Christians and Jews helped her become 'a better person, a better Christian."
She grew up in a devout Christian family, in Plain, Wisconsin, the sixth of 11 children.
A movie documentary made about her life also criticized the antisemitic elements of Mel Gibson 's "The Passion of the Christ."
