He studied agriculture in Coimbra. He published his first major work, Esteiros, in 1941.
He was a militant Communist. His name was even given to the building that housed the Portuguese Communist Party's headquarters.
He was the son of farmers, and he spent his childhood in Portugal's Porto District.
He and Angela Davis were fellow Communists.
