ABOUT STEVE OWENS

Former running back who played in the NFL from 1970 to 1974 for the Detroit Lions and won the Heisman Trophy in 1969 with the Oklahoma Sooners.

He played football at Miami High School in Oklahoma.

He was selected to his only Pro Bowl in 1971, as injuries hampered his pro career and eventually forced him to retire.

He was born in Gore, Oklahoma, and he grew up in Miami, Oklahoma.

USC's O.J. Simpson won the Heisman Trophy the previous year, 1968.
