British poet and author whose confessional works include A Good Time Was Had By All and Mother, What Is Man?
She began working as a secretary at London's Newnes Publishing Company in 1923.
She suffered from a form of tuberculosis as a child and died of a brain tumor in her late sixties.
Her father left home when she was young. Following her mother's death, she and her sister were raised by their Aunt Madge Spear.
Her work was greatly admired by Sylvia Plath , a literary contemporary and fellow confessional poet.
