She began acting in Bengali films in 1952 and quickly became a top actress.
She was the first Indian actress to receive and award at an international film festival - in 1963 in Moscow.
Her daughter Moon Moon Sen and granddaughters Raima Sen and Riya Sen followed in her footsteps into Bollywood.
Not everyone was convinced of her talents - Jaya Bachchan famously called her "just a good-looking actress."
