Best known for creating the Philadelphia style of soul music during the 1970s.
He studied classical piano as a child, but sang with Daryl Hall , Leon Huff , and Kenny Gamble in his teens, leading to a diverse background in music.
He co-wrote the 1968 song La-La (Means I Love You), which went on to be recorded by numerous artists such as the Jackson 5.
He fathered eight children.
He collaborated with numerous artists, including Dionne Warwick, Johnny Mathis, and Elton John .
