ABOUT THOMAS ALLEN

British opera singer who is known for his talent singing as a operatic baritone. He is renowned for both the quality of his singing voice and the versatility of his acting. In 2011, he was appointed as chancellor of Durham University.

He was trained as a singer at the Royal College of Music in London. He also studied at Ryhope Grammar School from 1955 to 1964.

He made his debut at the Royal Opera House in 1974 as Donald in the opera Billy Budd. Before stepping down as Chancellor of Durham University in the summer of 2022, he was one of the longest serving Chancellors in the history of the university. Throughout his singing career, he performed on some of the world's biggest stages.

He was born and raised in the mining village of Seaham Harbour, England.

He succeeded novelist Bill Bryson as chancellor of Durham University.
