Thomas Douglas

ABOUT THOMAS DOUGLAS

Canadian politician who lead the New Democratic Party and served as Premier of Saskatchewan from 1944 to 1961. He notably led the first democratic socialist government in North America.

He was an amateur boxer and he was the Lightweight Championship of Manitoba in 1922 and 1923.

After receiving treatment for Osteomyelitis he became a strong supporter for free healthcare.

His father was an iron moulder who had fought in the Boer War and he married Irma Dempsey in 1930.

He is the grandfather of television actor Kiefer Sutherland .
