She used to sing commercial jingles for a Spanish radio station.
Her album Culture Swing was named the Folk Album of the Year in 1992 by the National Association of Independent Record Distributors.
She had 12 older siblings. Her parents were both Mexican immigrants.
She performed for former U.S. president Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary Clinton.
