ABOUT WAITE PHILLIPS

Oilman who made a fortune with his Phillips Petroleum Company. He was also a prominent philanthropist.

He and his twin brother left the family home to travel West, taking odd jobs along the way to pay for the journey.

He donated 127,000 acres of his land to the Boy Scouts, part of which became the Rocky Mountain Scout Camp. He left his estate to the University of Southern California, which named a hall after him.

He was born in Conway, Iowa, the seventh of 10 children. His father was a Civil War veteran.

He was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, joining another oilman T. Boone Pickens .
