He was placed with his uncle and aunt at four months old after his parents divorced and due to their heavy touring schedules. After high school, he enrolled in a seminary to become a minister.
He was featured in the role of fellow country singer Jerry Lee Lewis in the movie Walk the Line , which stars Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon . Waylon Payne has also made guest appearances on television, including the series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.
He is the son of Sammi Smith and Jody Payne. He has a brother named Austin.
He was named after country singer Waylon Jennings , who is also his godfather.
