ABOUT WILLIAM GADDIS

A twentieth-century American author, he is best known for his novel, The Recognitions, which was named one of TIME magazine's 100 best novels from 1923 to 2005. His other notable works include J R and A Frolic of His Own.

While a student at Harvard University, he wrote for the Harvard Lampoon.

He was a two-time recipient of the National Book Award for Fiction.

He grew up in New York and Connecticut. With his wife, Patricia Black, he had two children.
